Member Spotlight
This is a new feature for the CAPS photo club so members get to know each other better, and also to make them aware of what the photo club has to offer.

Please meet Kathy Swanson, the CAPS Program Director

I was a teacher for 36 years. I taught everything from kindergarten to grade six, in some pretty interesting places. Firstly I taught on the Blood Indian Reserve (near Cardston, AB) , then Alert Bay , BC, and thirdly in Duncan, BC. I thoroughly enjoyed teaching and all the wonderful things kids said and did and what they have become.
I owned a nice camera when I was teaching, but never really got into photography until I retired. Eight years ago I bought myself a Canon Rebel and started taking photography seriously. Initially colour and composition caught my eye, but as time went on I realized I needed to know more technical information.
For two years I took on-line and classroom courses through Red Deer College and completed their Digital Camera Certificate Course. To celebrate and push the envelope further I bought a Canon 7D (with NO AUTOMATIC SETTINGS!). I enjoy taking all kinds of photographs but don’t really have an adequate lens for birds.
I like seeing or hearing about experimental photographs and trying them myself. For example I tried liquid from glow-in-the-dark bracelets in a jar with metallic confetti and got a photo I really like. I’ve come to love my tripod and use it a lot!
I like to drive around Central Alberta and when I reach my destination I ask myself “What can you photograph here?”. I try to challenge myself: high versus low; whole versus parts; fast versus slow, etc.
My advice to budding photographers would be : Shoot! Shoot, because you can learn as much from your mistakes as from your successes.
