Member Spotlight
This is a new feature for the CAPS photo club so members get to know each other better, and also to make them aware of what the photo club has to offer.

Please meet Dennis Berg
My name is Dennis Berg and I have been a member of CAPS for 3 years. The photography bug bit me after taking a photography class in high school. At that time 35mm was the way to go. I started off with a cheap 35mm camera and worked my way up to a Pentax ME Super. Then digital came along as the new rage and everyone had to have one.
My first digital camera was a point and shoot. My wife’s son was playing AAA hockey back then so I tried taking hockey pictures with my point and shoot with less than impressive results. Back to McBains to upgrade again to get a camera that would do the job I wanted it to do. I’ve upgraded twice more since then and currently shoot a Nikon D750. I enjoy taking hockey pictures because it’s the sport I like the most and for 6 months a year you can shoot as much as you want. My favorite lens for taking Hockey pictures is my 70-200mm 2.8. It’s a must-have if you want to up the odds on getting good hockey pictures in dark arenas.
One of the best photographs I had taken was a hockey picture. I was standing behind the net talking to a father and Grandmother watching their son and grandson play. I took about 10 photos of his son and picked the best 2 and had them printed for the Grandmother. There was another game the next day so I gave the photos to the Grandmother and I thought she was going to cry when someone she did not know would go through the trouble of doing this for her. That made me feel pretty good.
We have started traveling beyond Alberta in the last 5 years, going to photograph people, places and things that you have seen on TV or on the internet. There is really nothing like seeing something in person and doing your best to capture it. If I were to give any advice about photography it would be to take more photos than you think you need because you never know if you will get back there again or not. A wise old man told me “anyone can take a picture but not everybody can be a photographer”. And that is what I strive for.
