COMPETITIONS
Competitions are open to members who have paid their membership for the current
CAPS year.
A photograph, once entered in a CAPS competition, cannot be entered again in any
CAPS competition (note that the monthly assignements are not considered competitions).
The member must list all their print entries for a competition on one entry form which
must accompany their entries.
Members compete in one of three divisions - Novice, Intermediate, and Advanced.
Members may begin competition in the Novice division, graduating to the Intermediate
division upon the accumulation of 60% of available points in one Club year, and
graduating to the Advanced division upon the accumulation of 70% of available points in
one Club year. A member may choose to compete in the Intermediate or Advanced
division. The Executive may ask a member to compete in the Intermediate or Advanced
division. Once in a division, a member may not revert to a lower division. The names of
members moving up divisions will be announced at the Spring BBQ. More detail on how
points are calculated can be found in Appendix B.
The judges independently judge each image. In the case off a tie the judges decide, by
discussion, the placement order of the tied images. Only one first, second and third place
will be awarded, but there may be multiple honourable mentions.
What is Digital Processing?
A final image is said to be digitally processed only if all the digital alterations applied to
an original image emulate commonly used chemical print processing techniques. Digital
Processing also includes a few special alterations to help maintain the integrity of the
original image.
Digital Processing allows:
- adjustment of colour balance and tone, white balance, brightness and contrast
- dodging and burning
- image cropping
- conversion of colour images to monochrome
- sharpening of images
- removal of dust scanned off of the original film image
- removal of ―blotches caused by dust on the sensor of digital cameras
What is Digital Manipulation?
An image is said to be digitally manipulated if the difference between the original and
resulting image is beyond the capabilities of commonly used chemical print processing
techniques. Note that HDR is considered digital manipulation.
