MONTHLY ASSIGNMENTS

This is an informal activity designed to get members out shooting to a theme and/or trying new techniques that may otherwise not be considered. The subjects are as varied as possible to accommodate a wide range of topics and level of expertise. The topics are chosen each year at the Annual General Meeting in April, but are open to the photographer’s interpretation. Digital manipulation is permitted in the monthly assignment.

The rules are:
  1. An entry is a print up to a maximum of 5" X 10".
  2. The entry is not to be matted or framed.
  3. If an entry includes a border the total maximum size is 5" X 10".
  4. One entry per paid up member per monthly assignment.
  5. Images must be photographed following the last AGM.
  6. All paid up members attending the meeting may judge the monthly assignment, but nobody is obligated.
  7. A member is entitled to submit an early entry, if he or she knows in advance that he or she will be absent from a meeting.
  8. Photos that are too graphic or offensive (e.g. nudity, violence) may be withdrawn by the President or Vice-President.

A plaque is awarded to the member who accumulates the highest aggregate score in the CAPS club year. Certificates are awarded yearly for First, Second, Third place and Honourable Mention. Points accumulated will form a part of the point total that determines ―Photographer of the Year.

  • Judging is done in three categories, Subject, Impact, and Technical.
  • Each category is added together and assigned a total score
    • Each entries total score will fall between 3 and 15 points inclusive (except for rating your own photo a With a “3”"denoting an image with serious flaws, and “15” being a perfect entry that can’t reasonably be improved on.
  • Subject 1-5 points - Is the theme of the image clear and unambiguous? Is it a creative and thoughtful.
  •  interpretation? Impact 1-5 points – Is there a “WOW” factor present that makes the subject impactful? What is your initial reaction to the image?
  • Technical 1-5 points – Are the focus, depth of field, exposure, colour quality, etc. enhancing or detracting as regards to the subject?

COMPETITIONS

Competitions are open to members who have paid their membership for the current CAPS year.

A photograph, once entered in a CAPS competition, cannot be entered again in any CAPS competition (note that the monthly assignements are not considered competitions).

The member must list all their print entries for a competition on one entry form which must accompany their entries.

Members compete in one of three divisions - Novice, Intermediate, and Advanced. Members may begin competition in the Novice division, graduating to the Intermediate division upon the accumulation of 60% of available points in one Club year, and graduating to the Advanced division upon the accumulation of 70% of available points in one Club year. A member may choose to compete in the Intermediate or Advanced division. The Executive may ask a member to compete in the Intermediate or Advanced division. Once in a division, a member may not revert to a lower division. The names of members moving up divisions will be announced at the Spring BBQ. More detail on how points are calculated can be found in Appendix B.

The judges independently judge each image. In the case off a tie the judges decide, by discussion, the placement order of the tied images. Only one first, second and third place will be awarded, but there may be multiple honourable mentions.

What is Digital Processing?

A final image is said to be digitally processed only if all the digital alterations applied to an original image emulate commonly used chemical print processing techniques. Digital Processing also includes a few special alterations to help maintain the integrity of the original image.

Digital Processing allows:

  • adjustment of colour balance and tone, white balance, brightness and contrast
  • dodging and burning
  • image cropping
  • conversion of colour images to monochrome
  • sharpening of images
  • removal of dust scanned off of the original film image
  • removal of ―blotches caused by dust on the sensor of digital cameras

What is Digital Manipulation?

An image is said to be digitally manipulated if the difference between the original and resulting image is beyond the capabilities of commonly used chemical print processing techniques. Note that HDR is considered digital manipulation.
