Competitions
Winter competition images must be submitted by Friday November 16th at 5pm. They will be picked up from McBain, or you can bring them to the CAPS meeting prior, if you wish. Judging will be at the Golden Circle on Nov 23rd. The Spring Competition deadline is April 26th with judging at the Golden Circle on May 1st.

Competition Changes for 2018 - 2019
General Competition Rules
Mats can be any color and images can be any size within the mat.
14. All photographs must be printed on a photographic medium. For the safety of your images, Images on canvas, metal or other medium other than photo paper are discouraged as we cannot guarantee they won’t get damaged.
15. Images that depict nudity or graphic violence are not allowed in competition. (the Competition Director will forward the offending image to the President and Vice-President and they will decide if the image is to be removed from the competition).
16. At the Spring Banquet a Photographer of the Year ‘Novice’ and Photographer of the Year ‘Open’ will be announced based on the total points received in the Monthly Assignments and the Winter and Spring Competitions.
17. A list of CAPS Top Ten photographers as determined by accumulated points will be announced at the Winter and Spring banquets and then posted on the CAPS website.
18. An image or video can only be entered once into a CAPS competition.
Any competition items not on the CAPS website please consult with the President.

SUBMISSION OF COMPETITION ENTRIES
Competition entries can be either be submitted to the Competition Director at the last regular club meeting or at McBain Camera. (See Below for Dates)

General Competition Rules
- ALL entries, images or video, must now have their JPEG files put on a memory stick that is submitted to the Competition Director. Files must be named as they were named on the competition entry form. The memory stick must also have the name of the competitor clearly displayed on it.
- A current, official CAPS entry form must be submitted to the Competition Director along with all images and videos entered into a competition (entry forms are on the CAPS website).
- All images entered into a competition must be clearly labeled on the back of the image (label forms are on the CAPS website). The label must indicate the correct orientation of the image (which way is up^).
- Only ONE entry is now allowed in each subject category.
- Images are now scored out of ten points: /5 Impact and /5 Technical = 10 points
- There are now two levels of photographers in competitions; 1) Novice and 2) Open. If you were an intermediate or advanced competitor last year you must now identify yourself as an Open competitor.
- Images and video can be taken at any time for all categories except the following: Monthly Assignments, Doug Corrigan Landscape & Wildlife and Spring Work/Out.
- All images and video submitted for competition must be the work of the competitor.
- All photographic processing, enhancement and digital manipulation must be the work of the competitor. (for more information on what constitutes processing, enhancement and digital manipulation of an image consult the Competition Handbook on the CAPS website).
- The inclusion of a texture into a photographic image is now allowed.
- ALL images or video can now be color or monochrome. (consult the Competition Handbook on the CAPS website for further explanations of what these are).
- Competitors will now receive a single participation point for each Monthly Assignment they enter for a total of seven points in a club year.
- Images can only be matted in one of four sizes:

Competition Subject Categories
WINTER COMPETITION
- Human Study: a photograph that contains a group of people, an individual or part of the body of a group or individual as its subject. (Novice and Open levels)
- Non- Human Living Study: a photograph that contains a group of living domestic plants or animals, an individual plant or animal or part of a plant or animal as its subject. (Novice and Open levels)
- Landscape, Seascape, Cityscape: the physical geography and/or weather and lighting conditions found in a natural setting including man-made structures form the subject of a landscape. A cityscape’s subject is the physical geography and/or weather and lighting conditions, or man-made structures found within an urban environment. The sea and its adjacent coastline and/or weather and lighting conditions found in on or near the sea as well as man-made structures (boats, lighthouses, etc.) found in or beside the sea form the subject of a seascape. (Novice and Open levels)
- Action/Sports: A photograph that has captured the movement of a subject(s) or of a sport as it is being played. (Novice and Open levels)
- Macro/Close-up: a photograph that fills the frame with the subject. Often the photograph will show only a portion of the subject. A macro shot shows the subject at 1:1 or greater magnification and usually shows very fine detail. (Novice and Open levels)
- Creative Photography: a creative photograph is where the subject and other elements within the image are digitally manipulated. A specific theme will be selected by the club executive for the Creative Photography category of each competition. (Please refer to the Competition Handbook for a more detailed description of this, or any other subject category. The theme of this category for each competition will also be posted on the club website). (Combined levels) “Abstract” is the 2018 Winter theme. “Graphic Arts” is the 2019 Spring theme.
- President’s Choice: this is a theme-based category where the photographer interprets the theme selected by the club president. (more information can be found in the Competition Handbook) (Combined levels) Winter 2018 theme is “Untouched”.
- Doug Corrigan Nature - Landscape: a photograph in this category must have been taken within the last two years preceding the competition date (date taken must be included with photo). The photograph must be of a landscape that does not show the hand of man. The photograph can be enhanced, but not digitally manipulated. This category is not judged by the photographer’s level and is open to all club members. (Combined levels)
- Best of Show: this category is composed of all winning photographs in every other subject category in both the Novice and Open divisions. Judges will score each photograph independently to determine the winner. Judges with images in this category will be excused from judging. The winner of Best of Show will receive three points. (Combined levels)
SPRING COMPETITION
- Subject categories 1- 6 and 9 remain unchanged for the Spring Competition.
- President’s Choice: this is a theme-based category where the photographer interprets the theme selected by the club president. (more information can be found in the Competition Handbook) (Combined levels) Spring theme is Capturing Time.
- Subject category 8 will change to:
- Doug Corrigan Nature - Wildlife: as in the landscape portion of this category, all photographs must have been taken within the last two years preceding the competition date (date must be included with photo). All subjects must be WILD. Domestic animals and cultivated domestic plants cannot appear in the image. The photograph must not show the hand of man (an unobtrusive man-made object such as a fence wire upon which a wild bird is perched could be allowed. The Competition Director reserves the right to ask competitors to withdraw or change images that reveal too much of the hand of man). (Combined levels)
- Two additional subject categories are found in Spring Competition:
- Spring Workshop/Outing: a photograph in this category must have been taken within the current club year (May through April) at either a club sanctioned outing or workshop. (a list of the workshops and outings will appear on the CAPS website - competitors should consult this list before entering this subject category). All entries must include the name and date of the outing or workshop. The photograph can be enhanced, but not digitally manipulated. This category is not judged by the photographer’s level and is open to all club members. (Combined Levels)
- Digital Audio-Visual Presentation: the digital video must not exceed three minutes in length and must only contain still photographs and/or video clips take by the competitor. The first three seconds of the video should be black, followed by the title of the presentation. The last five seconds of the video should also be black followed by the name of the competitor and credits for any music or sound effects used. The club strongly recommends the use of royalty free music and sound effects. (look up sources for royalty free music and sound effects online. Competitors are responsible for any legal issues that may arise from the use of copyrighted music or sound effects used in their videos). Regardless of whether music and sound effects are royalty free of not, all sound items must be credited following the competitor’s name at the end of the presentation. (Combined levels)
