Carmen Therriault - Abraham Lake
After my presentation last night once I could open the chat box, I had a quick look through the questions, so I just want to clarify locations. Abraham Lake is very undeveloped in comparison to the mountain parks. Signage is poor and there are no clear paths down to the lake - you need to find and make your own, or look for areas that are more packed (if there is snow). So, driving south from Nordegg, go past the Hoodoo creek sign, watch for areas where the road is at a low point/bottom of a hill, and look for areas where it is relatively flat and open in the trees between the road and the lake. Park on the lake side of the highway, and then make your way down to the banks of the lake. The area between Hoodoo Creek and Aurum lodge is called the "Belly of Abraham" because of the shape of the lake. This entire area is usually good for bubbles, and the highway is close to the lake. There is no sign that indicates "belly of Abraham".
I have attached an additional map showing the "safer" areas to explore (yellow) and the areas to avoid (red) at Abraham Lake. The larger yellow area is my recommendation on the best place to view methane bubbles this time of year. The map also shows the location of the new "parking lot". If I get a chance to check out the parking lot, I will report back:) As mentioned, it's a great idea to download maps before heading out, as you will not have cell service on the road.
Here also is the link to the website I recommended:
https://explorenordegg.ca/abraham-lake-ice-safety/
I would also check out the "ice conditions" tab on this website before heading out.
Another thing I forgot to mention is that it is very easy to get confused on directions (north, south etc) at Abraham Lake, especially once you are on the ice. I recommend having a compass, or app on your phone. A whole group of us once waited for the sun to rise in the completely wrong direction haha.
Feel free to contact me directly if you have any additional questions.Happy exploring and shooting!
